24/07/07 - Malahide Girls Do it Again - WFAI All Ireland Finalists

Malahide United Under 14 girls chase dizzy heights of All Ireland again. On Sunday the girls travelled to Killala in Mayo to play their semi-final of the Under 14 All Ireland Cup. After a tough battle against a very strong team from Mayo the Malahide girls were successful and won 1-0 to earn them a place in this year’s final.

The winning goal was scored in the 23rd minute of the first half after some excellent interchanges in midfield. Nicole Owens burst through the defence and lobbed the goalkeeper. Her attempt rebounded off the upright and the cleverly positioned Katie Nimmo expertly volleyed from 12 yards. The Malahide girls performed brilliantly and their resilient defence could not be passed. Excellent goalkeeping by Emer Cassidy ensured a safe passage.

The team will now face the winners of Lifford v Ballinahassig in the final on August 12th.

The under 14’s are also well positioned to win this years DWSL title and also in the league cup semi-final against Raheny Utd.

We wish the girls all the best for the duration of the season

04/07/07 - Malahide Girls earn representative honours at the 2007 WFAI Umbro Gaynor Tournament

Nicole Munnelly from Malahide United captained North Leinster as they retained the U16 Trophy at the Gaynor Cup held at the University of Limerick from 29 June to 01 July. North Leinster drew their first match against Ulster on Friday but then went on to beat South Leinster and Connaught on Saturday before capturing the trophy by defeating Munster in a tight game on Sunday.

Seven Malahide United girls, Emer Cassidy, Ciara Gale, Hannah Spain, Niamh Lawlor, Nicole Owens, Ciara Harris and Niamh Walsh were on the North Dublin team which competed in the Gaynor Cup U14 competition and the team was managed by Tom Cassidy. Ulster went on to win this age group for the first time in the history of the tournament.

The WFAI Umbro Gaynor Cup is Ireland’s most prestigious representative tournament and is a key recruiting process for the International squads. Upon it’s inauguration, the age-groups were for Under-16 and Under-18 but in 2005, an Under-14 age-level was introduced in an effort to extend the development work being undertaken
