07/03 - Malahide Town on Call for the Irish Blood Transfusion Service

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service is proud to announce that Malahide will be the first town in Dublin to undertake the Town on Call challenge.

Town on Call is an initiative which encourages people to show support for their town by giving blood and encouraging others to do so too. Malahide is already a valuable source for blood donations but with everyone’s help we believe it can do even better. By aiming for a 20% increase Malahide can improve the number of donations from an average of 95 to 114.

Malahide has been chosen because of its wonderful community spirit that has been proven time and time again by such activities as the Tidy Town competition. The Town on Call initiative is a unique way for people in Malahide to feel that they are making a difference where it matters most. Everyone can participate by either going to donate or encouraging others to do so.

Previous participants of the Town on Call programme have included Ballina in Mayo, Newcastlewest in Limerick, Carrigaline in Cork and New Ross in Wexford. These have all been great successes and have resulted in a substantial increase in donations. The IBTS is confident that Malahide will show the same enthusiasm.

Malahide is on call for our upcoming Blood Clinic in The Grand Hotel on Tuesday 18th March (2.30 - 4.45pm and 7-9.30pm).

For more information on blood donation please ring our dedicated Donor Line 1850 731 137, log onto ibts.ie or see Aertel page 691

02/08 - U18's - Aurora hit back to share the spoils

MALAHIDE UNITED.........2 AURORA (ONTARIO)......2

MALAHIDE UNITED Under 18s hosted a highly competitive friendly fixture as Canadian side Aurora from Ontario came from behind twice to earn a share of the spoils on the Gannon Park All-Weather pitch.

Played in balmy summer conditions on the Coast Road, it was the Conor Shiels home skippered side who made the initial breakthrough - thanks to Stephen Hart's clinical finish five minutes before the interval. Malahide had played some nice football and could have added to their advantage but with just seconds left on the clock to the interval, the yellow shirted visitors levelled through Chris Reel with a stunning strike into the roof of the net from 25 yards out.

Despite the lack of recent match practice, Willie Shiels side forged ahead again after some clever approach play. This time it was from the penalty spot after an ill-judged tackle as Jamie O'Sullivan kept a cool head to find the back of the net 26 minutes into the second period.

But, visiting coach George Watt will be pleased in advance of trips to Belfast and to Galway for the Umbro Cup that his charges showed a keen resilience in bouncing back to tie the game up a second time.

Aurora were unlucky to have a goal disallowed for offside as an injury hit home side struggled to stem the raiding Canadian attack but, prompted by impressive skipper Matt Battaglia, Aurora gained their reward with a pacy attack down the left flank and the cutback from the byline found Andrew Franzke on hand to scramble the ball over the line.

Aurora have their website report here.

27/07 - Roy Keane and Sunderland AFC in Gannon Park

---------------> Click HERE for Sunderland Pictures in Gannon Park<----------------

Roy Keane paid a visit to his Republic of Ireland training ground today and brought his first team, coaching staff, coaching academy, support staff, physios, kit staff, hospitality staff and directors!

There were also about 100 boys and girls lining up for the training session at around 12.00 mid day, most of these children had won their place through various competitions around the country. At 3.15pm they were still going and Roy was heading out of his press conference to meet the squad that had just arrived.

As the squad started it's warm up, the crowds of spectators looked forlornly through the fence (where they were supposed to be) until Roy gave the nod and let them move to the side of the pitch.

The boys and girls from the training session (laden down with Sunderland goodies) made their way over to vwatch and learn how the Premiership boys do it. It was good to see Paul McShane here as he had signed for the Black cats only last night.

When the warms up and stetches were completed on the top pitch they then moved to the Senior Pitch for a match. Yet again, Dicey has done the business as the 350 tons of sand that kept Spurs and Wolves out of Gannon Park had settled in and the Pitch looked it's usually brilliant green perfect self.

Things started to wrap up about 5.00pm and the parents waiting around for the last five hours rounded up their footballers as Sunderland headed off. The children also headed off with various autographs covering their SundIRELAND kit!

Sunderland play Bohs tomorrow, Cork City on Sunday and Galway United on Monday - good luck to you on your tour of Ireland.

27/07 - New Club House Structure Goes Up

Here are a few pictures from the first session of 27/6....

12/06 - Pat Cleary appointed Director of Coaching at Malahide United

AMBITIOUS MALAHIDE United FC have appointed highly experienced Pat Cleary as Director of Coaching and the Clare Hall resident takes up his appointment with immediate effect.

Cleary, a holder of a UEFA A license, was formally unveiled at Gannon Park this week when he took the time out to speak to schoolboy managers about his plans and development strategy.

Cleary undertook his coaching badge at Lilleshall and also had stints at Loughborough University and Durham and brings a wealth of talent to his new role on the Coast Road.

Chairman Don Butler, on behalf of the club which fields teams in the DDSL, NDSL, LSL and Dublin Women's Soccer League welcomed Cleary to his new role: "Pat has an impressive coaching CV and has a wealth of footballing knowledge. I know that Malahide United can only benefit from the work he will carry out on behalf of the club and there are exciting times ahead for everyone associated with the club. I'm delighted to welcome him to Malahide United and wish him every success as Director of Coaching."

Cleary started his coaching career as a 15-year-old with Belvedere with legendary scout Noel McCabe and he has since seen service at Peterbrough United, the FAI Women’s international team, Dundalk, Sligo Rovers, Longford Town, Bohemians and Ards.

He more recently helped set up some of the underage development structures at Belvedere and joins Malahide with immediate effect.

With more and more of the clubs teams pushing up through the ranks to join the already established Premier teams, the clubs senior's this year captured the famed EBS Metropolitan Cup in the centenary running of the competition while current developments at Gannon Park will see the provision of a state of the art clubhouse with fitness rooms and juice bar to go alongside the first class dressing room facilities already in place.

“Malahide United has so much potential and I’m extremely excited by the challenge ahead” said Cleary. “We possess first class facilities and there are lots of excellent coaches with a lot of enthusiasm for the game already in place. I’m looking to harness that energy and develop it. The coaches I have met here all want to learn and add to their coaching abilities and that can only have a positive impact throughout the club from the Premier teams down to the community based boys and girls of the club.”

Added Cleary: "The Nippers Academy on Saturday morning is one of the great success stories of the club and it has been very successful in providing raw material coming through into the playing side of the club and we'll be looking to maintain that productive exercise."

Cleary’s commitment to coaching saw him commute to England on a regular basis while undertaking his qualifications, but it also afforded him the opportunity to link up with the likes of Peterbrough United where he worked with Aidy Bothroyd and Don Ashwood, and, as part of his brief travelled extensively throughout Europe - notably with the club’s youth teams.

He was also responsible for setting up a youth academy with St Kevin’s Boys while he also had a similar input into the establishing of links with WBA.

Said Sean Gaine of Malahide United’s Coaching Committee: “We’re absolutely delighted to appoint a coach of Pat’s calibre and experience. It signals clear intent on the part of Malahide United that we have ambitions of the highest level for our players and coaching staff.”

"We are a community club that can satisfy players of different abilities but we believe by improving our coaching we can improve all our players across the ability spectrum and still attract players of the highest standard too."

Added Gaine: “ The Republic of Ireland train here on a regular basis while recently we hosted a UEFA Pro License Course with the likes of Gerard Houllier and David Moyes lecturing. Many other professional clubs have availed of our facilities and that is a great testament that the club meets the most demanding of standards."

As part of the club‘s continued development a major drive to attract in quality players will get underway in July.
Said Pat Cleary: “We have facilities and ambitions to cater for the best players in Ireland, of that there is no doubt. There are clubs out there who regularly have players travelling from the likes of Kerry and Donegal to play in Dublin. We have facilities far superior to these clubs, so it’s up to us as a club to show prospective talent that we have the right package to suit them on and off the park.

"We are gearing up for sustained success but we’ve got to get the name out there and let ambitious players know that Malahide United has set the highest of standards and can offer potential talent a suitable platform to match their own goals. "

MALAHIDE UNITED will publish details of forthcoming assessment sessions, but anyone who wishes to be advised by email of these sessions can do so by emailing your name, address and age to admin@malahideunited.com

(United won 4-2 on pens)

After a long season that saw us go unbeaten in the league in 2007 we made it into a 3 way playoff for promotion against Ucd and Loughlanstown. Having despatched Loughlanstown on Sat 1 nil on the magnificent surface in Gannon Park we faced Ucd at Belfield on Tues.

UCD were quickest out of the blocks and came at us with all guns blazing. Playing a clever combination of 1 touch and 2 touch football they didnt allow us close them down as planned and they took a deserved lead on 5 mins when the UCD forward was shown inside on the edge of the box and beat Greener on the near post.

UCD continued to dominate and it took some heroic ariel defending from halpo and gav to stem the relentless pressure. They should have gone 2 up on 30 mins but failed to convert after some clever play down thier left flank. Lucky to see the break only one down we took awell earned rest and regrouped. Greego brought on fresh legs at half time bring on fintan on the right for cash.

We upped our game in the 2nd half playing as a unit and followed instructions Niall McKenna pumping quality balls into the corner for Fintan to expose their left back. With Govro and Gaz getting in some superb crunching tackles in midfield and brades continuing his stalwart work at left back UCD began to look rattled and were punished on 60 mins when clever play down the right by Niall and Fintan saw them put the low cross into their own net with keogher ready to pounce.

UCD seemed to settle again and were unlikely not to add a couple to their tally coming close on several occasions. Govro pounded their 18-yard area with his long throws and UCD were lucky to clear some quality efforts from Malahide. Smithy came on for keogher on 65 who in spite of drinking all the jungle juice at half time had nothing left in the tank. Hardly surprising as the pace of the game even had duracell man struggling at times.

Greego junior came off the worst of some robust ucd tackles and almost needed oxygen after a a fine run down the right was stopped with him being completely up ended at the corner flag. Both sides came close to claiming the winner but the ref blew on 96 mins to send the game to extra time. Ciaran did some neat physio at the short break and Malahide enjoyed some fresh water after griff climbed through a gap in the ucd clubhouse wall to fill the water bottles.

Fintan continued to torment the left back who was eventually substituted and junior making way for karlo after picking up another war wound.Smithy made some clever moves up front and was unlikely to se his left foot effort blocked with the goal at his mercy.

UCD forced the play again and after a super move were unlucky to see the rocket strike deflected over the bar by bleach blond boy in the Malahide goal. The ref blew after 121mins.

28/05 - Metro Cup glory for Malahide

GREYSTONES..1 MALAHIDE UNITED..1

(United won 4-2 on pens)

Malahide United finally landed their first piece of top flight silverware as they bagged the 100th EBS Metropolitan Cup at the expense of holders Greystones as the Gannon Park boys came out on top in a war of attrition at Dalymount Park last Friday night.

United proved that they had the guts for the glory in nerve jangling penalty shoot out with both Stephen Cashin and Gareth Logan grabbing hero status. Cashin produced a stunning save from his counterpart Chris Mason to set up Logan and the skilful midfielder didn’t disappoint as he thumped home the winning spot kick.

While this centenary final failed to live up to its five star billing, United will not be too worried about the spectacle. It was a game of few chances and had few glimpses of excitement but in the end it was about lifting the silverware and it was Bobby Browne’s boys that got their hands on one of the most famous cups in Irish football.

For Greystones, on a day when election fever was gripping the country, there was to be no second term for the holders as the North Wicklow constituents failed to find the proper tallies in the shoot out, missing two from four spot kicks.

As the early evening sun splashed across Dalymount it was United who settled the quickest, but it was Stones that drew first blood when Gordon Watson thumped home from close range after twenty one minutes, the striker cashing in on some hapless Malahide defending to finish past Stephen Cashin.

Malahide’s reaction was swift and David Lynch took Adam Shahababeen’s gliding header off the line, but as the half wore on both sides had to be content with landing weak jabs with no knock out punches in sight. The second half continued down a similar path as both sides failed to work the goalkeepers, then with fifteen minutes left United were back in the game in freakish fashion.

Mark McCormack charged forward from his right full back beat and played a neat one two with Gareth Logan. McCormack went to return the ball back to Logan only for William Murphy to put in a tackle. The ball rebounded back out of the tackle, cannoned off McCormack’s shin and flew into the top corner from 18 yards out.

Lynch had a few United hearts beating out of sync when he grazed the crossbar with a injury time header and just before the end of the first half of extra time Stephen Roche stepped inside his marker but Cashin responded brilliantly to tip over the winger’s curling effort.

In the second period of extra time it was Bobby Browne’s side that looked most likely to find a winner as Ian Ivory first brought a brilliant reaction stop out of Mason and then steered a Logan cross inches wide as the ‘Stones ‘keeper floundered at his feet.

GREYSTONES: Chris Mason; Anthony Forster, Andy Flynn, David Lynch, Anthony Cahill, Ian Horan, William Murphy, Stephen Roche, Shea Brien, Gordon Watson, Declan O’Mahoney. SUBS: Michael Lawless (for Horan h/t), Phillip Cooney (for Watson 63mins), Richie O’Hanlon (for O’Mahoney 108mins), Donal Byrne, Lee Osbourne.

15/05 - U17 Premier in the Mary Farrell Cup Final - Lusk, Sunday 20/5 KO 3.30pm

This is a great achievement for the team to even reach the final - among others, they beat two teams from the older Under 18 Premier division (Donaghmede and Howth Celtic) to reach this final.

Their opponents will be Swords Celtic who are currently top of the Under 18 Premier Division and who will obviously start as favourites.

It goes without saying that our U17 Premier would welcome any support they can get next Sunday in Lusk and the best of luck in Lusk from all the other 1,000 footballers in Malahide United and all other team management/officials.

11/05 - Nippers Section win a Malahide Community Sports Awards

At the last Schoolboy/girl Committee meeting we discussed entering some of our teams into these awards. This is the first year that the Council have held these awards. Dave Feenan then entered the Nippers Section (see text below) and with the result, our Malahide United Nippers Section won their category!

Don Butler was in attendance, many of our committee and the Nippers Section attended the presentation at the Malahide Rugby Club this evening.

From the club's point of view this is a wonderful recognition of the success of the Nippers Section and a great advertisement for the club. We have no doubt that we can maximise the winning of this award to continue the growth of the Nippers and to also help in the role out of our Nippers 2 / Seasiders Academy (more to follow on this)

The was the text of Daves' proposal ....

Malahide United Nippers Team – Noelle Brooks, Tony Reilly, Lorcan Mooney and all the coaches involved

For the last 11 years Malahide United have run their Nippers Academy on a Saturday morning for 5-7 year olds. This is the first introduction to football for many children each year and the foundation stone for their participation within the club. Under the stewardship of the above named people the Nippers Academy is one of the most recognised facilities in North County Dublin for the development of young players. This is illustrated by the ever increasing numbers on the waiting list to join.

Every Saturday these children together with our club coaches, who give up their time voluntarily, gather from 1030 to 1230 to learn the basic skills and to part-take in a structure environment. As one can appreciate teaching 5 to 7 years old boys and girls is not that easiest task in the world but to witness the satisfaction of these children when they complete even the simplest of tasks is wonderful to see.

Today many of our 15 to 16 year old players are a by-product of the Academy. Many other children are progressing their football careers with other teams outside of Malahide and a number of these players are now playing at the highest level possible both within our club and with other clubs.

For their dedication and teaching/coaching philosophy over the last 11 years we wish to nominate our Nippers Academy and their team of coaches for this award.

Dave Feenan.

08/04 - Malahide United AFC Win Europes Biggest International Girls Tournament

Tournament Winners Celebrating - Picture texted to Website by Gemma today 8/4

Malahide United's Girls took on the might of Europe today, Easter Sunday 8/4. A group of 18 girls from Tom Cassidy's and Mono Kirby's teams travelled to Holland to compete in the biggest football tournament for girls in Europe. This was a first for Malahide United's fledgling girls section which has quickly established itself a one of the leading clubs in Ireland.

The team played against some of the top womens teams in Europe and competed in the Under 15 Section with Countries like England, Holland & Denmark all sending their top teams to contest the event. Malahide United are proud to be the only representative team from Ireland competing. There are 420 teams from all over Europe competing in both boys and girls competitions this year, a reflection on the growth of this competition and the strength of competition expected. Click here for a full list of all teams).

A full list of teams and nationalities in the girls sections follows:

So with Tom's U13/14 selection not content with winning the WFAI All Ireland Cup in 2005, they combined with Mono's selection and beat the best in Europe.

Malahide United had the perfect performance in the group stages winning 1-0, 5-0 and 3-0, on thru the Q/F and by winning the S/F 2-0 met up with Coventry City's Girls Academy in the final. The drama continued where we had a goal disallowed and the final whistle blowing at 1-1 (which incidentally was our first goal conceded throughout the entire tournament). It went to penalties - we won 4-3.

Yet again our girls impress - so congratulations from all associated with club to our fellow footballers, to Tom and Mono and all involved with team management, to all those who helped with the fundraising and to Gemma for her online updates.

Where to next we ask!

(Incidentally check out the sponsors for Coventry City's Girls Academy - The Cassidy Group!!!!!)

04/04 - Car Window Smashed in Gannon Park This Evening

Would all members, parents and visitors please take care and do not leave personal belongings in sight inside their vehicles within Gannon Park. For this evening between 6.30 and 7.00pm, a club managers side window was smashed and his wallet was taken.

This type of vandalism has happened before during long winter evenings, but this was a bright evening with a full car park and a lot of activity within the club grounds.

Keep an eye out guys and if you see any strange behaviour within the club grounds, just shout at them from a distance as there are nearly always plenty of people around that can assist with observations.

01/04 - Coaching the Coaches by Man Utd Soccer School

The Coaching Staff of the Manchester United Soccer School will host a session for all our managers and coaches on Tuesday 3rd April from 6.45pm to 8.30pm on the All Weather Pitch.

If you are interested in attending please wear tracksuits and moulded runners as you may well be asked to participate in the session. So come along and join in the fun whilst hopefully learning something at the time.

Should this session clash with your allocation on the AWP please contact Sean Gaine.

09/03 - Extra time needed to separate local sides

Malahide United 2 : 0 Glebe North
(After extra time)

By Paraic Brady

THE much-anticipated local derby between Malahide United and Glebe North was as close as expected and it took the second half of extra time to separate the two sides. Late goals from Ian Ivory and Dave Scully secured the victory for the delighted Gannon Park outfit. The game was so tight that in ordinary time there were only three chances of note.

The first fell to Malahide after 26 minutes when a string of passes sent Ian Ivory clear, one-on-one with keeper Jason Lowney but he shot narrowly wide. The second came 10 minutes into the second half when Ahern went clean through but his effort to lob the keeper went just over. The third came with only nine minutes remaining when Glebe’s Justin Ahern forced an excellent save from Malahide’s keeper Tony O’Dowd.

The first half of extra time was similar to the 90 minutes that preceded it and it looked like nothing was going to separate the teams but in the dying minutes the ball fell to Gareth Logan and in a crowded box he calmly controlled before passing to Ivory who slotted home from close range.

‘The ball could have gone anywhere but unfortunately it ended up in the back of the net,’ commented a disappointed Glebe spokesperson. Four minutes later the home side made sure when Ivory caught the Glebe centre half James Bell napping and took the ball down the endline before finding Dave Scully who volley home from close range to make it 2-0.

It was a cruel blow to Bell who otherwise had an outstanding game.

‘Bell had an excellent game. Indeed all of Glebe played well including the veteran, Ciaran Dunne,’ added a Glebe spokesperson who went on to say that despite his team been a division below it was a ‘very even game’.

After the game a delighted Gary O’Toole, of Malahide, said ‘It was a close game that could have gone either way but it is great to be in the quarter finals.’

In other news Malahide’s second team travelled to Wayside and won 3-0 with goals from Alan Doyle, David Cox and Kevin O’Hanlon while their third team had a convincing 3-1 at home to Boyne Rovers with Paul Murray, Carl Ryland and Ian Casey bagging the goals.

Malahide’s fourth team were unlucky to go down 4-0 away to Dundrum despite a noted cameo appearance of Manager John Cole.

Congratulations were extended to Alan Doyle on the birth of his son Brian. He is only a week old yet Doyle still managed to nab a goal for Malahide on Saturday and turn out as sub on Sunday.

Malahide United: Tony O’Dowd, Paul Lally, John Lawlor, Stephen Murtagh, Mark McCormack, Mickey Wright, Gareth Logan, Adam Shehabadeen, Stephen Murphy, Ian Ivory, David Scully. Subs: David Cox (Stephen Murphy).

Glebe North: Jason Lowney, Fran Mooney, Ciaran Dunne, Gary Boylan, James Bell, Justin Costello, Keith Delahan, Andrew Brannigan, Gregory Portlega (a new polish signing), Keith Richardson. Subs: Mark Byrne (Keith Richardson), Martin Downes (Gregory Portlega).

07/03 - NDSL Club Pitch Playability (and more) Now Available on the NDSL Website

The NDSL have listed all clubs and their grounds on their website and intend to have up to the minute information relative to pitch playability each weekend, please click here for full details (or click the new button on our Home Page, under the Aertel button). This will be invaluable to all, as the NDSL will now have control over the latest information from clubs that use both public and PRIVATE pitches. It is also in a more user friendly presentation and elimates those possible difficulties a manager faces when trying to decipher Aertel!

A spin off benefit of these Pitch On/Off details is that, for the first time, we can see the Club / Pitch relationship and who is private (mainly not covered by Aertel) and who is public. So instead of trying to work out which park hosts which club and is it Fingal or Dublin CoCo or even private, you can find it on www.ndsl.ie!

It also identifies which group (7/9/11-aside) plays where.

The league also has plans to set up links from each of the pitches in the list direct to that pitch location page in that clubs website (i.e. see here for our club link) and also to add links to club secretaries and club websites. For those clubs that do not have websites there are long term plans to build a library of online maps to every pitch location.

Fair play 2ya Brendan Renwick of the NDSL!

It takes away a bit of the fun on a Friday and Saturday, but on the other hand it will for an easier and somewhat quiter weekend for all NDSL club secretaries.

1/03 - Fingal County Council Approves Grant for Malahide United

The club has been notified that Fingal County Council has approved a €3,000 grant that will put towards the cost of training courses, training cones and bibs. (We all know about the shortages of cones)! Malahide United gratefully acknowledges this valuable grant and the continuous support and assistance received by the County Council that enables us to provide sport at all levels for nearly 1,000 Fingal footballers.

1/03 - Club Administrator position being made permanent, Applications Invited

In October 2006 the executive appointed Fiona Murphy on a temporary basis as Club Administrator. The executive have now decided to create a permanent position of Club Administrator and now invites anyone interested in applying for this position to forward a CV marked Administrator to the Executive Committee Gannon Park Malahide Co Dublin. Gerry will remain there for an hour each evening. He will also be available in Gannon Park on Saturday and Sunday mornings to facilitate the first matches. The dressing rooms will be opened and all the nets will be left outside of Dicey’s shed for the relevant managers.

Will all managers please note that Gerry is not responsible for putting up the nets and managers are still responsible for cleaning out the dressing rooms used by their team and the opposition team? The last team playing in Gannon Park will still be responsible for locking up the complex. That team will need to get the keys from Sean Gaine for that purpose.

19/02 - FAI “Youth Coaching Level” Courses in Gannon Park

The FAI will be holding their “Youth Coaching Level” course over two weekends in April and May in Gannon Park, followed by assessments in June. However applications are open to all managers/coaches in the club who have completed either the old FAI Level 1 or those who have attained both Kickstart1 & 2 qualifications.

What do I need to do?

Interested parties must contact Sean Gaine on 086-8046054 or e-mail Sean at maidbrigade@eircom.net no later than Wednesday 21st February. All applications will be screened by Sean and the FAI before a place is offered.

What are the dates?

The first weekend will be 20-22nd April 2007, followed by 25-27th May 2007. Assessments will be on Sunday 24th June 2007.

Venue

Gannon Park

Times

Usually the start time is 7pm on a Friday with 9 to 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Times will be confirmed closer to the dates by Sean.

What will it cost?

The club will pay the cost of the course. However it is expected that the individuals selected to attend the course will provide back “Coaching Time” to the club across all age groups.

Observation

If it is the intention of the two managers/coaches from a team to attend this course will you indicate this to Sean immediately as this may impact on your fixtures?

For further information please contact Sean directly.

18/2 LSL 1st - Malahide make no mistake in Inter replay

MALAHIDE UNITED..2 ST. MOCHTAS……....O

Malahide United made sure that they made no mistake with their second bite of the cherry as they cruised by underdogs St. Mochtas and into the FAI Intermediate Cup quarter finals at Gannon Park yesterday.

It took a late, late strike to save Malahide in the first game against the Saints, but in yesterday’s replay Bobby Browne’s side left nothing to chance as they ended this game as a contest within a half an hour with two dazzling goals from Gareth Logan and Stephen Murphy.

Only the heroics of Anto O’Connor, who produced a string of brilliant saves in the first half, and the width of the crossbar saved the Saints from a right first half roasting and although Christy McElligott’s side made a contest of it in the second half, the result was never in doubt.

Within eight minutes O’Connor started to defy the United strike force as he made a wonderful point blank block from Ian Ivory but the pressure finally paid off as the home side deservedly edged in front through midfielder Gareth Logan on 22 minutes.

A lightening quick attack from United had the Saints in a bind and Michael Wright’s deep cross picked out Stephen Murphy at the back post. The United winger dragged the ball back into the path of the onrushing Logan, who dispatched a stunning first time effort high into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Malahide continued to pile on the pressure and O’Connor was back on inspirational duty when he turned a John Lawlor effort around the post but as the clock ticked onto the half hour mark, the Saints were hit with the killer blow.

Again, United turn defence into attack in double quick time. A stunning cross field ball by David Scully sent Wright scampering free down the right. The winger cut into the area and picked out Stephen Murphy and the United man thumped the ball high into the net.

Logan licked the top of the crossbar with a free kick, Scully was denied by another top draw save by O’Connor and Murphy volleyed against the crossbar before the half time whistle lifted the siege from the Saints goal.

The visitors almost got back into the game after the break when Jonathon Gunnery’s deft flick header rolled inches wide of Tony O’Dowd’s goal but after that United looked comfortable and the Saints’ misery was confounded when skipper, Brian McCarthy was sent off for a second bookable offence in the latter stages.

MALAHIDE: Tony O’Dowd; Mark McCormack, Declan McDonnell, John Lawlor, Stephen Murtagh, Gareth Logan, Michael Wright, Adam Shehabbaddin, David Scully, Ian Ivory, Stephen Murphy. SUBS: Alan Doyle (for Murphy 81mins), Patrick Dunne, Stephen Parkins, Neal Beasley, Bobby Prenderville, Paul Reilly.

ST MOCHTAS: Anto O’Connor; Derek Bridgeman, Brian McCarthy, Stefan Buttner, Glen McGloughin, David Simpson, Paul Munds, Andrew Brady, Paul Clare, Jonathon Gunnery, David Dillon. SUBS: David Kelly (for Dillon 54mins), Fran Hughes (for Clare 81mins), Brian Eustace (for Kelly 90mins), William Byrne, Warren Fee.

10/2 - Construction Work at Gannon Park

Construction work on Phase 2 of Gannon Park has started. As a result of this, entry to the club house by the main door and all the car-parking spaces in front of the main door are blocked off.

Unfortunately this will put pressure on parking especially on a Saturday and Sunday with the Nippers, Schoolboy/Girl and Senior’s games taking place. We would appreciate where possible if any form of car-pooling can be used to help the situation especially at 1015 to 1045 and 1215 to 1245 on Saturdays.

Entry/Exit from the club house building will be via the door nearest the AWP.

Please observe all signage and parking restrictions within Gannon Park for the foreseeable future.

27/11 - MUAFC and Malahide Lions Club - Book Collection for Africa

The Malahide Lions Club are organising for a collection of second hands books to be sent by container to Liberia in Africa for the Xmas. At present the Irish Army are fulfilling peace keeping duties in this country and in conjunction with the Lions Club of Ireland have undertaken a project to distribute second hand school books into the schools and also to distribute other suitable books into a general library system.

What types of books are they looking for?

Ideally they are looking for old primary and secondary schoolbooks together with any other suitable novels or paperbacks. Please exclude Irish language books. You do not need to sort the books. The Irish Army will do this on arrival of the container.

How do I get the books to them?

The Lions Club have organised a collection point in the car-park of the Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Club this Wednesday 29th from 10am to 5.30pm and on Thursday 30th from 2pm to 8.30pm. Please bring any books along to them during those times. Please place all your books in boxes for easy of transportation. Do not leave any books in Gannon Park for collection.

What do I need to do?

Whilst I appreciate that the notice period is short can all managers either copy the PDF that was attached to the managers email and hand it out to your players this week at training or alternatively send them a text message informing them of this worthy cause.

On behalf of Barry Donaldson and the Malahide Lions Club may I take this opportunity to thank you for your assistance!

31/10 - U17 Premier Team Management Double Jobbing

Congrats to Willie Sheils, Paul O'Neill and Colm Tighe the current U17Premier management team on their selection as the Brenfer Representative Coaches for this year U17 Brenfer squad. We wish them well.

10/10 - Fingal Safe Cycling Action Group

This action group has been set up by our Ken O'Connor and here is an email that have we received from him.........

"Ken O'Connor here. I am assistant manager of the U10B1 Brenfer team. I was manager for the past three seasons, but have reduced my involvement in order to give time to another 'community based' project.

As I am sure you are well aware, very few MUAFC players cycle to Gannon Park - the roads are simply too dangerous. In fact there is nowhere safe in the area for our children to cycle (I don't feel too safe myself cycling on our narrow roads).

Anyway, after many years grumbling, I decided recently to do something about it - so I have established the Fingal Safe Cycling Action Group.

Few people (including myself until recently) realise that the Fingal Development plan 2005-2011 contains some great objectives, incuding the development of 'The Fingal Coastal Way'. This is an off-road pedestrian and cycle route running the length of the coast from Dublin City to Meath. This route will run past Gannon Park.,

This and other excellent 'safe cycling objectives' will gather dust and die unless budget and resources are allocated etc..

The Fingal Safe Cycling Action Group will lobby for the building of 'The Fingal Coastal Way'.

I would ask that you visit the site I have set up here. Please satisfy yourself that the objectives of the group are sound, and complement the community based ethos of Malahide United. Please take a couple of moments to register your support using the facilities provided.

If possible, I would ask that you forward a copy of this e-mail to all of the managers in the club, to ask them to register their support, and to ask them in turn to ask parents of all of the players to register their support. As an individual, my lobbying power with the councillors and the council is limited. But when we co-operate, we can achieve so much more.

The 'Fingal Coastal Way' has the potential to greatly enhance the excellent amenities we already have in Malahide. In addition it will provide young children, yours and mine, with an opportunity to exercise in the space they need. Young children need the space to fall off their bikes and get up again, without fear of being run over by a bus, car or lorry.

Further details of the specific routes we would like to see built in the Malahide are available at our website.

Many thanks and regards,

Ken O'Connor

www.fingalsafecycling.blogspot.com"

We have circulated the above email to all team managers, who in turn will notify their squad and families. We would like to encourage all to register their support on the Fingal Safe Cycling Action Group website.

How many parents would love to avail of the oppurtunity to allow their children to cycle safely to and from Gannon Park - no more pick ups and drop offs!!

Good luck to you Ken and if you apply those skills to your action group in the same manner as applied to your team for the three years, then you will have a very successful campaign.

9/10 - Malahide Community Sports Awards initiative launched - hosted by Fingal County Council

The concept of the Malahide community sports awards is the brainchild of Karen O Donnell, a physical education teacher in Scoil Iosa Malahide. Her commitment to sport and the community is evident in her participation in sport in and outside of school time. With her knowledge of the many sporting achievements of pupils in all the local schools she felt it was time that the community of Malahide come together to honour those who have gained special achievements in their sporting field and those who voluntarily give up their time in the many sports clubs in the Malahide area. Karen contacted these clubs, schools and students from the transition year in Scoil Iosa to get representation and from this the Malahide Community Sports Awards committee was formed.

All local clubs and business in the Malahide community are represented at launch and we look forward to their support with this venture. More information regarding these awards can be obtained from the new website here

07/10 - Nipper Presentation to Paul Keogh

Dicey pulled out all the stops and managed to arrange our DDSL U9A1 match to clash with the Player of the Morning Awards at the end of todays Nippers Academy. Paul Keogh was dragged away from the sideline where Dicey thanked him for the last 10 years of his association with the Nippers. Paul has put in a huge amount of time and effort into the Academy and nearly every schoolboy/girl up to almost U18 will remember what they have learnt from Paul from their time in the Nippers. Dicey then presented Paul with Paul's own trophy.

Lorcan managed to squeeze into the shot also.
