We picked up a plum draw when paired at home to high riding St Patrick’s Athletic in the second round which was held at Scotch Hall in Drogheda on Wednesday evening. Thanks to the tremendous replay success over Fanad United in the first round, Bobby Browne’s side can now look forward to taking on the Inchicore Saints when Malahide will look to create a cup giant killing act by eliminating a top flight eircom league club.

Blarney United / College Corinthians v. Derry City
Bohemians v. Waterford Crystal

  Malahide pleased with Saints draw

Malahide United chairman Don Butler has expressed his delight at Wednesday evening’s FAI Carlsberg Cup second round draw, which pitted the Leinster Senior League side against eircom League Premier Division big guns St Patrick’s Athletic.

Malahide’s Gannon Park, which will stage the game, serves as the training base for the Republic of Ireland senior squad in the build-up to internationals. But the home team will take centre-stage at the end of May when United – currently top of the Leinster Senior League – welcome St Pats to the north County Dublin town. Don Butler, the club chairman, told eleven-a-side.com: “We’re absolutely thrilled. It’s a great draw for the club and a great draw for Malahide as a whole.

“We did very well against Sligo Rovers last year when we were a bit unlucky not to have won at the Showgrounds.

“The team we have now is probably better than last year – we’re contending for the league and we have maybe three or four guys who are close to being called up for the Leinster Senior League representative panel.

“With the tradition and glamour of St Patrick’s Athletic, we’re expecting a nice crowd at Gannon Park at the end of the month and we’re all looking forward to it.”

  23/04 - MALAHIDE UNITED 1:1 FANAD UNITED
It's all square on the Coast Road as Malahide face FAI Cup replay in Donegal

MALAHIDE and Fanad will have to do it all again after this first round F.A.I. Cup game ended tied at one. Fanad, the away team, will obviously be the happier whilst Malahide certainly won't be relishing a trip to Donegal at the end of a grueling season.

A couple of half-chances early on falling to Wayne Griffin and Arthur Lynch but it wasn't until the 34th minute that this game sprang to life. That was when Gareth Logan set Ray Whelehan clear and the midfielder controlled well before lobbing over the advancing Darren Nash to give the home side the lead.

The Donegalmen responded immediately and Nash almost equalized within a minute but the ball got caught up between his legs. They went to the break level however when Nash's scuffed shot fell nicely into the path of Darragh Patton who got to it just before Colin Blanche to nick it home.

Fanad seemed content with what they'd got and brought Nash back to bolster the rearguard. The seasiders were having difficulty breaking the strong defence down and from a long way off a replay looked in the offing.

Ray Whelehan almost bagged a second when his cross from the right came back off the crossbar with Darryl Collins unable to steer his header in from the rebound. Alan Doyle could have done better when he got on the end of a good move down the right involving Wayne Griffin and Collins but he shot over.

Bobby Browne brought in Alan Corcoran and Adam Firdych in an effort to avoid the long trip north. Corcoran's mazy runs have so often reaped rewards for Malahide in the past. The lofty winger had a couple of decent attempts but the final effort was snuffed out by the dogged Fanad defence each time.

Fanad won't be worried about not troubling Blanche too much in the second period. Their intentions were obvious and they got what for. They seemed also to have done their homework with regards to Griffin. The prolific striker got little room to display his wares yesterday.

So both teams go into the hat for the second round. A big name draw would increase the incentive. Fanad assume the favourites tag perhaps, but don't write off Malahide yet.

MALAHIDE United’s next game, a week from Easter Sunday, is the much anticipated FAI Cup opener against Fanad United of Donegal and the Red and Blacks are counting on a huge turn out at Gannon Park. ‘We would love to see the same number of supporters that turned out to see our top table clash against Crumlin,’ said Malahide’s Assistant Coach, Gary O’Toole. The Gannon Park outfit have most of their squad available thought sadly one of their top scorers, Eamon Sheridan, looks set to be out for the rest of the season.

He picked up a back injury some weeks back and despite hopes that he would make an Easter resurrection the latest diagnosis is not good. ‘As a Donegal man he will be especially sad to miss this crucial tie,’ continued O’Toole.

Malahide have the advantage of a home tie and if they perform to their ability on their day will be favourites though Fanad are going well in the Ulster Senior league and recently knocked out last years L.S.L Champions, Bangor, in the Intermediate Cup
