Report on 2006/2007 season

Considering this was the first season in the Major division (following on from the league win last year) the 2nds did very well to consolidate this year. They would have been challanging for the league but for a poor start due to our travelling students being away for the summer. The highlight of the year was the defeat of Lanigan Cup holders Crumlin United in the quater-finals. However we were unlucky to be narrowly beaten by Bluebell in the semies.. All in all it was a good season and the very yound squad are rapidly gaining valuable experience.

Malahide 1 Glasnaoin FC 1 (Malahiide win 4-3 on Penalties)

After a slow start to the game Malahide gradually began to take control of the tie. Captain Mickey Wright was a dominating force iin the middle of the park but it was hiis plump little sidekick Johnney "the tractor" Traynor who nearly opened the scoring with a monster strike from a free kick from 25 yards, only to see the ball come off the crossbar. This was the only chance of note iin the first half. The second half was more of the same until Mark "the snackbar" McGovern adjudged to have pulled down the opposing centre forward at the edge of the box. From the resulting freekick, keeper Ivan "the cat" Sherlock pulled off an amazing save but was let down by his defenders as the onrushing Glasnaoin forward tapped in the rebound unchallanged. Things were getting hairy as the pressure mounted.to get an equalizer and even with the introduction of Bobby "Casper" Prendeville we just could'nt score. Then finally in the 96th minute young centrehalf Rory (17 year old kid) played a defence splitting pass , Casper like a gazelle leapt over to leave the ball run to the oncoming centre forward Dessie Whelan (Locky's Da). A clinical finish from this over the hill player took the tie to extra time. The sides remained deadlocked and the tie went to a penalty shootout. Glasnaoin drew first blood only for Sean "the hedgehog" Hogan to equalise. Then the cat saved the next peno with an outstretched leg. Then the grey fox, Des Whelan managed to hit the crossbar (which might be great for Soccer AM, but no use in a peno shootout).to level the sides again. The pressure was on again, but Sherlock, like a cat on steroids, pounced to his right to save again. Next up came vice-captain. Greg "the welder" Morris and with nerves of steel he slotted the ball safely home. Following Galsnaoins successful conversion McGovern stepped up. The Beachcomber could'nt deliver a snackbox as efficiently as McGovern slotted home. After Glasnaoin slotted home their 3rd peno Tractor Traynor stepped up in an effort to settle the tie. The plump little man drilled the ball home to take Malahide through to the 4th round of the FAI Junior cup, all thanks to the Invers who always have the bottle, unlike the Captain who could'nt take a peno due to being scarred for life following a peno miss at schoolboy level.

Update 30th October

The 2nds are still progressing well are unbeaten in the league with 23 points from 9 games. Their league match this week was scheduled at home against Greystones but this was changed to an away fixture as the 1st team were also fixed for a home game, regretfully on Saturday morning this match was called off by Greystones. I am sure the 2nd team management do not relish the backlog of fixtures that is beginning to grow. However that is the price of success. Next week the 2nds play in the 3rd round of the FAI Junior Cup at home to GlasnaoinFC. We wish them well in this fixture

Update October

The season continues to promise much for the second team, they are well out on their own in the league and are still competing in 3 cups. More importantly they have provided the necessary support to the first team when required. We hope to have updated match reports from the second team shortly.
