Our team was only formed at the beginning of the season and it
was the first time for most of the lads to play club football.
Indeed all the managers were complete rookies.
Overall it has been a great season. We didn't win any trophies,
but everyone enjoyed themselves. All the players developed their
skills and learned to play as a team. From losing matches at the
start of the season, we were very competitive in the final matches
and finished our games with a magnificent 6-1 victory.
The team had great spirit and produced some very exciting football.
There were a number of matches where they came from behind and
through sheer teamwork, courage and determination overcame more
experienced and skilful teams.
Parents and families gave great support and encouragement at
every match no matter how far we had to travel. It was evident
at a lot of the matches that the lads lifted their games in response
to the enthusiastic and positive supporters.
Hughie Clarke played great football all season and frightened
many goalies with his powerful strikes. Kieta Appenah gave great
service in defence and with his tremendous pace and dogged determination,
he saw off many attacks. Owen Connolly was quite brilliant in
central defence; a strong and skilful player with a great future.
Conor Greenan was superb in his first season, playing great team
football and a consistent goal scorer. It was a sheer delight
to watch Robert Chambers dribble his way through strong defences
often resulting is timely goals. Conor McNamara was by far the
most improved player over the season; he played powerfully in
defence and defended critical attacks on many occasions. Joshua
Hales gave great service all year, never giving up and setting
up successful attacks on more than one occasion. Alex McLeod was
central to many of our successes, a determined and skilful player
with the ability to carve up the best defences. Aidan Fox was
a tower of strength in goal all season, making many courageous
saves and saving our bacon in many matches. Graham Gaffney frightened
many opposition goalies with the ferocity of his strikes and scored
a critical goal against Woodlawn who until then had gone unbeaten
all season.
Jim Hales and Lyndon Appenah gave me great help all season and
imparted a myriad of skills and a love for soccer to all the team.
For myself, it was a very satisfying to see a bunch of lads develop
into a great team and become friends in the process.
